Me, Myself & I

My childhood
To sum up my childhood, I would say it was pretty average. As I was an only child, and still am, I was pretty lonely but I am glad that I manage to make new friends and still manage to keep in contact with them till today.

Family conditions
I live with my Mum, Dad and Grandmother. My family is definitely very close-knit and I do value and appreciate spending time with them. Once in a while we will have the usual bickering but we are still a happy family. My dad is a retiree and is currently doing a home based business and my mum is a kindergarten teacher.

3 experiences making the most impression on me were:

1. Staying in a forest
It was around 10 years back that my Mum signed me up for this 2 days 1 night camp in FRIM. We had to stay in a cabin next to the jungle, it's not your typical camping but you get the drift. It was a fun experience where we walked through the jungle at night, we didn't even need a torchlight as the lights from the city were bright enough for us to find our way  around. The most amazing things can be found in the jungle such as glowing mushrooms and wild boar tracks. There was literally a river next to our cabin, we were able to catch a few weird insects and small fishes, we even studied each an every creature we caught. Staying in the forest or near the forest is something really refreshing and people should try it out at least once. Despite our city being called the concrete jungle, FRIM is a hidden gem within this concrete jungle.

2. National Service
I was the "lucky" few chosen for this program. Most students think that NS is something dreadful and horrifying but it was probably the highlight of my 21 years spent on this earth(so far). I learnt so many things from this program, I learnt how to be more responsible, disciplined and most importantly a better person. I definitely benefited from this and on the plus side I even lost weight from being sedentary during the SPM months.

3. Visiting a Ngo
I've been to a few Non-governmental organizations but the one that left me with biggest impression was  when I visited the Kiwanis down syndrome association. The kids there are not at all what people assume down syndrome children are, these kids were really smart and talented in their own ways. Each of them had really unique personalities, some were unbelievably sociable and some were shy. The day we visited, we did a lot of group activities and they listened to us well and were very cooperative. During the game sessions they were so happy cheering and playing the games that I can't help feel warm and happy inside too. When I look at these kids, I really pity them because they were not able to have a normal childhood like any average kid. I feel more appreciative of what I have, even though I am not smart, I am not good at certain things I am lucky to be able to live a normal life. These kids have so much potential but because of their disability they are not able to do much. I feel thankful they have such organization to help these down syndrome kids. In the future, I hope to be able to visit more NGOs because it is really an eye opener.
